7 Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Dog

weblink This week is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! There are approximately 3,500 animal shelters across the United States serving the estimated 6-8 million homeless animals who need refuge each year, and many more animals find themselves in need of the services provided by local rescue groups.

legal to buy provigil online Today, we’re giving you a few more reasons why you should adopt a shelter dog, which helps out our shelter systems. Can’t adopt a pet? Here are another seven ways you can show your support to rescue groups instead, and even more ways to hack your lifestyle to do more good.

1. It’s Recycling!

Of the noblest form! While we may be giving our animals a second (or third, or fourth) home, we don’t consider our pets as “cast-offs” or secondhand goods, and rightly so! Because even though they might have once belonged to another, their love is now reserved for you and you alone, no matter their past experiences.

2. It’s A Way to Support A Charity

Currently, every community in the U.S. needs animal shelters. When you adopt from a shelter, you assist a non-profit organization in its mission. Plus, shelters improve the community through mandating adopted animals to be spayed or neutered, reducing the chances that more unwanted animals will occur within the same area.

3. It’s A Way to Fight Puppy Mills

Puppy mills and backyard breeders are very much alive and well and thriving, producing millions of animals that end up sold in pet stores around the country. Adopting from a shelter means reducing support for these cruel practices, and sometimes even saving some of the pets that come from these terrible beginnings.

4. You Help Fight Over Population

There are just not enough homes out there for the number of animals born every year—and anywhere between eight to twelve million dogs and cats are euthanized because there’s simply not a place available for them. However, adopting from a shelter can help counteract the cycle of pet overpopulation, even just a little bit.

5. You Can Adopt An Older Pet

We’ve touted the benefits of adopting adult and senior pets before. They’re usually house trained, and come with a few tricks even! If you’re looking to avoid the puppy faze, or just aren’t looking for the abundance of youthful energy they might bring along, an adult shelter animal is a great choice.

6. You’ll Be Loved Unconditionally

Give an animal a second chance, and receive unconditional love? Sounds like a good plan to me.

7. Because You’ll Change Their Life Forever

Every animal at your local shelter is there in need of a second chance. They’ve been lost, given up, abandoned, or sometimes worse, and through no fault of their own. By giving them a new life in a loving forever home, you’ll change the course of their lives. There’s not much better than that.

I think it’s such a great thing to adopt from animal control services. I’ve had quite a few shelter dogs over the years and I’d much rather adopt an animal in need if I can. Thank you for listing this information so that other can see the reasons to adopt a pet as well!
