What to Do When You Find A Lost Dog

A missing dog is terrible ordeal for any owner—an experience no one wants to go through if they can help it. Unfortunately, sometimes pets go missing even with all we do to prevent it. When you come across a dog that may not be a stray, but someone’s lost pet, it’s critical to do everything within our power to reunite the pet with their owner. Of dogs lost, 49% of owners were reunited with their pets by searching in their neighborhood, with 15% of the dogs being recovered because they were wearing some form of ID or had been microchipped. Only 6% of dog owners with lost animals were reunited with their dogs at a shelter.

Do you know what to do when you find a lost dog, to give it the best chance of being reunited with its owner?

7 Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Dog

This week is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! There are approximately 3,500 animal shelters across the United States serving the estimated 6-8 million homeless animals who need refuge each year, and many more animals find themselves in need of the services provided by local rescue groups.

Today, we’re giving you a few more reasons why you should adopt a shelter dog, which helps out our shelter systems. Can’t adopt a pet? Here are another seven ways you can show your support to rescue groups instead, and even more ways to hack your lifestyle to do more good.

Kickstarter Spotlight: Finding Shelter

We love featuring people on Good Dogs & Co. who are doing their part to make the dog world a better place. Personally, I can’t think of a group of people more deserving of that spotlight than rescue shelter volunteers. So when I saw Finding Shelter, a project dedicated to showing off the nation’s animal shelter volunteers and the beauty within the shelter system, I knew I had to share it.

Shelter volunteers are a rare breed of people, working on the front lines to help dogs in need. They see and fight against so many terrible hardships that befall our canine companions, and they keep on working, every single day. That deserves celebration.

The Finding Shelter project is currently live on Kickstarter! Your support will help artist Jesse Freidin produce a beautiful photography book while raising awareness and support for shelters nationwide.

7 Ways To Help Dog Rescue Organizations

Even before we rescued Topher, we’ve always wanted to do as much as we can for shelters and rescues in our area. However, when it comes to helping rescues and shelters, the actions that are pointed to most often are fostering, or donating money. For us, and for many others, fostering is unfortunately not an option. And what about when you can’t add to a rescue’s funds? What options are left?

Without the help of the general population, rescuers and adopters simply can’t save every dog facing euthanasia at a shelter. Here are some alternative ways to help rescues that can truly make a difference in the lives of shelter dogs.
